Haeger Pottery

A Brief History

The Haeger Pottery Company started out in 1871 as the Dundee Brickyard, 45 miles northwest of Chicago, Illinois.  This was the same year as the great Chicago fire and the company was instrumental in providing building materials to rebuild the city.  In 1900 the creator of the business, David H. Haeger died and control of the company went to David's son, Edmond.  In 1912 he introduced a more artistic direction for the future and started selling creative pottery art in addition to the standard, utilitarian pieces.  In 1938 Royal Hickman, an amazing designer, joined the company.  They soon began producing lines of his designs under the name of Royal Haegar which became very popular.  Over the years various designers came & went, but control of the company always remained in the Haeger family.  Today Haeger Pottery is still in business along the Fox River and is under 4th generation management.

General Information and Websites

Haeger pottery is a great place to start when becoming a pottery collector.  Since they are still in business today and were so prolific throughout the years, you can find nice examples of their work at relatively low prices.  Whenever I go to Goodwill, yard sale or flee market, it's a pretty sure thing that I'll see a Haeger pot or two.  Soon I'll be moving up to Bloomington, IL to live.  I am going to make it a point to make the 2 hour trip up to Dundee to visit the factory store, and tour the plant.  Afterwards, I'll be sure to write about my experience in the forum.
