Van Briggle PotteryA Brief History
Van Briggle Pottery was established in 1901, in Colorado Springs, Co. by Anne and Artus Van Briggle. Before this time, Artus had already been a recognized painter in Europe and a notable artist with Rookwood Pottery. By starting his own pottery he could freely explore Art Nouveau designs and experimental glazes. He soon became obsessed with recreating the glazes represented by Chinese pieces, during the Ming Dynasty, that had been lost to time. After two years of diligent trial and error, he finally perfected the technique. He went on to win many prestigious awards in Paris and the US. In 1904, Artus succumbed to tuberculosis at the age of 35. His wife Anne continued to fill his molds and create new ones of her own. Although ownership has traded hands many times, the company is still operating in Colorado, Springs today. |
